VISA / Requirements

Visa (Electronic Travel Authorization) procedure

The Department of Immigration and Emigration did make the presentation on the new Visa System.

The website www.eta.gov.lk has been launched.

The requirement of Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) will become effective from 1st January 2012.

On the basis of reciprocity, citizens of The Republic of Singapore and The Republic of Maldives are exempted from the requirement of obtaining ETA to visit Sri Lanka.

The authority to issue ETA lies with the Department of Immigration & Emigration, Colombo, Sri Lanka.

ETA obtained on-line is valid for travel within 30 days.

No refunds will be made for unutilized Travel authorizations.

Visa holders will be issued 30day short visit visa at the port of entry.

There will be an ETA processing fee of:

US$ 50 per person for Tourist visa with double entry for 30days. Any extensions will have to be made at the Department of Immigration & Emigration and there will be a country specific visa fee to be paid.

US$ 60 per person for Business visas (MICE too) with Multiple entry for 30 days

US$ 25 per person for Transit visas with Single entry for 7 days.

If the ETA is obtained at the Port of entry the processing fee will be US$ 75 per person for Tourist and Business visas and there will be no change for Transit visas.

Visa charges for Asian Countries US$ 10
Visa charges for other countries US$ 20

ETA applications can be made by the applicant, 3rd parties, Registered Agents, Sri Lanka Overseas Missions, on arrival at the Port of Entry or at the Head office of the Department of Immigration & Emigration.

The applicant will be informed within 24 hours if his or her application has been accepted or rejected.

All ETA holders must fulfil the following requirements at the port of entry:

  • A valid passport not less than 6 months
  • A confirmed air ticket
  • Sufficient funds for the stay


  • If ETA is to be obtained at the point of entry there will be a separate counter for same and payment will have to be made with a valid credit card or in specified foreign currency (Australian Dollar, Canadian Dollar, Chinese Renminbi, Danish Krone, Euro, Hong Kong Dollar, Japanese Yen, New Zealand Dollar, Norwegian krone, Pound Sterling, Singapore Dollar, Swedish krona, Swiss franc and US$).
